About the role

Roku offers millions of options to our users: movies, episodes, news, sports, and channels from all around the world. The Roku Content Platform is key to onboarding content into the Roku ecosystem, delighting our customers. Building a content knowledge platform that provides insights to downstream systems like Search, Recommendations, Ads, and Voice to shape customers' experiences is why we’re actively looking for a Senior Software Engineer, Content Platform who can drive further innovation.
We are seeking a highly experienced and skilled Senior Software Engineer to join our backend and data team. This role is crucial for designing, building, and optimizing distributed data pipelines, real-time data processing systems, and backend solutions that handle large-scale data effectively. The ideal candidate will have deep expertise in Java, distributed systems, and big data technologies, as well as a passion for solving complex problems and delivering robust solutions. We’re always in “build mode” because we’re a company of data-focused builders. Every day, you’ll look at what exists and find ways to make it better.
What you’ll be doing
- Architect, develop, and maintain scalable backend systems and APIs using Java (Spring Boot) and Akka.
- Build and optimize distributed data pipelines for batch and real-time processing.
- Leverage big data technologies (Apache Spark, Kafka, Flink) for high-performance data workflows.
- Develop solutions for data transformation, ingestion, and integration across structured and unstructured data.
- Implement and optimize real-time data processing applications for low latency and high throughput.
- Ensure seamless integration between data lakes, warehouses, and backend systems. Write clean, efficient, and reusable Java code, adhering to best practices.
- Monitor, troubleshoot, and optimize backend and data systems for performance, scalability, and reliability.
We’re excited if you have
- 7+ years of experience in backend development and distributed data processing.
- Proven expertise in designing and building scalable systems with Java.
- Hands-on experience with Big Data technologies such as Spark, Kafka, and Flink.
- Proficiency in Java and Java-based frameworks (Spring, Spring Boot, etc.).
- Strong understanding of distributed systems and microservices architecture.
- Experience with cloud platforms like AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud.
- Familiarity with containerization and orchestration tools like Docker and Kubernetes.
- Knowledge of SQL and NoSQL databases (e.g., DynamoDB, or Aerospike).
